The terms above are regularly used in the community and in the media and we may have a picture in our mind of what the individual with these needs looks like based on one or two key features. Our picture may stem from an item in the media telling the story of a particular child or we may know a person with a particular diagnosis and assume that all people with that diagnosis present with the same characteristics.
Glynis Hannell?s checklists for professionals are based on widely accepted diagnostic criteria and include the main characteristics that a person with a particular disorder might display. Using these checklists will help you to identify the characteristics of different disorders and recognise an individual?s unique pattern of special needs. The checklists are consistent with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM IV) which is recognised internationally as the standard diagnostic reference for use by doctors and allied health professionals.
Having these checklists to refer to will enable you to screen any child or adolescent between the ages of 4 and 18 years of age and feel confident that the information you pass on to parents, colleagues and allied health professionals is informed and reliable.
