The deadline for the 2018 challenge is 7th September, 2018.
Students are challenged to read 12 books from the start of the school year until the first Friday in September
When choosing books, it is important to select those that the student will find enjoyable and they can read independently (rule of thumb: no more than 1 error per 10 words).
The Premier’s Reading Challenge makes the following provisions for students with specific literacy needs in the guidelines:
8. The Premier's Reading Challenge should be inclusive for all students who are willing to take up the challenge to read 12 books. At the teacher's discretion, students may read more than 4 books not on the booklist (Reception - Year 7) or more than 8 books not on the booklist (Year 8 - 9).
11. Students can read books at an appropriate level for their language proficiency or literacy level to achieve the Premier’s Reading Challenge:
Books chosen from the Challenge booklist can be from the booklist for their year level and from booklists for year levels above their own. Guidance may be required for students in their choice of titles from booklists for older students.
Students with disabilities may read books that are at an appropriate literacy level for them and/or use texts that have been adapted to meet their individual learning and literacy needs including Braille texts, talking books, e-books, and books on tape, DVD or CD.
The challenge of reading books in other languages may appeal to students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are learning English as a second language and those involved in First Language Maintenance and Development Programs. (eg: students with special needs, ESL students).
13. Home education students or those participating individually do not need to register. Simply download the Student Reading Record from the website and submit the completed form by the end of September directly to the Premier's Reading Challenge Manager.
