Unless otherwise stated, all sessions will be held at SPELD, 298 Portrush Road, Kensington. You are advised to book early as courses with fewer than 15 enrolments two weeks prior to commencement may be cancelled.

Individual cancellations will attract a 20% fee. No refund is provided for cancellations within 2 weeks of the relevant workshop.

For parents of kids who do it tough: Part 1 and Part 2

Mark LeMessurier will present two new workshops based on his latest book Ideas to Improve Behaviour, Organisation, Friendship and Emotion. This book is filled with practical ideas for everyone, though the target audience is parents whose children ‘do it tough’ - children who forget, procrastinate, think they can’t, lose interest, display reactive behaviours, have difficulty making friends.

In Part 1, Beating the Trouble Spots, Mark explores ways that parents can beat ‘trouble spots’ – such as how to remember, how to get organised, how to run with less emotion.

In Part 2, Friendship and Emotional Resilience, Mark looks at the simple, everyday things we can do to help children create satisfying relationships and increase their emotional resilience.

Sharpening on pencil skills: Recognising and overcoming difficulties with pencil skills (including tracing, drawing, colouring and writing)

Read & Write is an assistive technology program with functions like text to speech, talking dictionary, talking spell check, homophone finder. It works alongside all mainstream Windows applications. The aim is to make the user as independent as possible. Much of the assistance that Read & Write offers is allowable in SA public exams for students with a recognised difficulty.

Teaching students with dyslexia - An introductory training course for teachers

This course is designed to provide teachers with an understanding of the implications of the learning style of students with dyslexia in the classroom so they can can cater for their needs. It will also equip teachers to tutor one or two students in a withdrawal situation.

The course combines the theory and practice of research based, internationally respected programs for teaching students with dyslexia. The practical application of structured, multi-sensory phonics based methodology is the main focus.

Hands-on Assistive Technology Course for Students

This course can provide assistance to people aged 10 to adult who are of average general ability but whose potential is limited by reading and writing difficulties. Numbers will be kept to 6 per group and age and ability matched as much as possible. This course does not teach spelling and reading skills. Our aim is to teach clients to use technology and software which will enable them to read and write electronically. Students will use SPELD laptops.
