What are specific learning difficulties
Specific Learning Difficulties
are also called Learning Disabilities. The most common specific learning difficulty
(SLD) is dyslexia (difficulty in reading, spelling and written language).
People with an SLD may have difficulty with mathematics (sometimes called dyscalculia) or
difficulty with handwriting (sometimes called dysgraphia).
Counselling, Advice and Support
· For parents who suspect their child may have a specific learning difficulty
(SLD) such as dyslexia and for adults who are concerned about their own learning
problems. Consultations are available with the Director of SPELD, an
educational psychologist, who will work out with you a plan of action
and recommend resources. To book
an appointment please contact SPELD.
Consultations:
Members - $50.00 per hour
Non members - $60.00 per hour
Assessments
· Comprehensive psychological assessments by an experienced psychologist specialising
in specific learning difficulties can be arranged. An assessment should determine the
extent of the problem, provide a thorough analysis of the person's learning strengths and
difficulties as well as detailed recommendations for intervention, including appropriate
remedial action and educational advice for classroom management.
· Testing of reading, spelling and mathematics skills by a specially trained teacher with
a brief written summary of the results is also available.
Tutor Service
· SPELD has a register of qualified tutors who provide individual tutoring for
children and adults in a Face
to Face or Online
Tutoring mode. These tutors are registered teachers who have undertaken
additional training in specific learning difficulties. While face to face tutoring
usually takes place in the students or tutors home, some tutors go into
schools.
If you're a teacher, why not consider becoming a SPELD Tutor?
Workshops and Courses
· Sessions are presented by specialists in the field of specific learning difficulties
for parents, teachers and other professionals. The schedule of current workshops is available online. A workshop
registration form is available for download in MS word format. [workshop registration form]
Talks to Community Groups
· SPELD provides speakers for teachers, parents and other community groups who wish to
learn more about SLDs.
Support Networks
· A parent network has been established, which provides support to parents of children
with specific learning difficulties and acts as an advisory body to the SPELD Council.
· Informal Network for Adults with SLDs.
