This new second level is slightly more advanced than the first and follows the same lively and interesting three series.
Now, in addition to the 42 letter sounds used in the first level, y is used for the /ee/ sound at the end of words like funny. As before, light type is used as a guide for those few letters that should not be sounded out, such as the b in lamb, but not the tricky words, which should already be familiar.
This set contains 6 Inky & Friends book titles, 6 General Fiction and 6 Non-Fiction titles. Each book has two sentences per page and 20 Tricky Words per book
The Jolly Readers use controlled vocabulary so children can read words from their knowledge of the letter sounds in Jolly Phonics. Only a few essential tricky words are used, and these are shown at the back of each book.
The Jolly Readers have engaging and lively stories which children enjoy. The problem of heavily controlled vocabulary ('cat sat on the mat') is overcome by the much wider use of words available with digraphs, such as splash, paint, look, and trail.
