The Big Six Key Skills for Learning to Read During the last two decades, converging research on beginning reading instruction has led to a clearer understanding of the skills that lead to success with reading and writing and how children learn to read. The five key skills identified are phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge (phonics), fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The Principals as Literacy Leaders project invited Deslea Konza to develop seven podcasts. The podcasts include the ‘Big Five’ skills for learning to read, an introduction to the teaching of reading and a podcast describing the vital role that oral language development plays in learning to read.
